Completed in 1790 as the heart of a 7,400-acre indigo (later sugarcane) plantation, this Creole-style manor is the oldest plantation house in the Mississippi Valley. In 1793 it was purchased by Jean Noel Destrehan who perfected the process of granulating sugar with his brother-in-law, Etienne de Boré. The house was expanded in 1810, and Greek Revival ornamental details were added in 1839 to conform to antebellum tastes.
