Following the wishes of King George V, the tenth city of Delhi was designed from 1918 according to plans drawn up by Sir Edwin Lutyens. Providing a strong contrast with Old Delhi and its crowded narrow streets, this new district, which was to symbolise the power of the British Empire, comprises a series of wide tree-shaded avenues, such as the main avenue, Raj Path, the "King's Way", which links the government buildings with India Gate. In the typical British style, the district is also home to parks, golf courses and polo grounds.
