For security reasons, tourists are advised not to visit this region. Formerly buried under the sand, the city was unearthed at the very end of the 19C. It is the former capital of Akhenaton, the pharaoh who, during his reign, was behind the major religious reform of imposing the worship of only one god, Aton. Little now remains of the city, although the necropolis is interesting: here, you can admire Armana art, an aesthetic at odds with tradition as it depicts the pharaoh and his wife, the famous Nefertiti, in intimate scenes. The decoration also provides a unique insight into life in Tell el-Amarna.
