Boats heading to Kaunos continue their journey to the river estuary, a marshy delta enclosed by a huge sand bank. Iztuzu beach is a delight: a white desert-like strip of sand 7km long dotted with the occasional wooden hut built by Turkish summer visitors. The water here is both warm and shallow. Visitors should be aware that loggerhead turtles (Caretta-Caretta), a Mediterranean species threatened with extinction a few years ago, come to lay their eggs here, and as such strict regulations exist to ensure their protection in the area.
