Not far from the nuclear power station at Civaux are a cluster of ancient burials hidden among cypress trees, whose decorated stone slabs represent an archaeological mystery. Are these the tombs of warriors killed at the Battle of Vouillé in 507 where the Franks fought the Visigoths, or of pagan converts buried on the site of their conversion to Christianity? The site has 15 000 burials. In the village is an archaeological museum displaying objects discovered during the excavations.
