The gaping crater of Papandayan (2,622m) can be seen from a distance, like a huge gash in the volcano's flank since the deadly eruption of 1772. From the car park, a path winds past heaps of red and yellow stones, out of which head-spinning sulphurous steam emerges. At the end of this lunar landscape, the hollow of the crater, whose slopes are carpeted in gorse paradoxically offers a peaceful sight. From here, you will enjoy unobstructed views over the crater.
