This sacred site has a prominent place in Okinawa's native religion. According to mythology, it was here at Sefa-utaki that the goddess Amamikiyo came down to earth and gave birth to the archipelago. From the 15C, this was the main place of worship for the kings of the Ryukyu, who came here to celebrate the start of the harvest. The immense jagged blocks of rock and the altars dispersed under the foliage of the tropical forest seem to exude a strange atmosphere. Continue on to the most sacred space, opposite the island of Kudaka, a legendary place where the first divine couple was brought together.
