Perched on a hill 5km from Cao Bang, Ky Sam temple was built in honour of the Tay chief Nung Tri Cao who attempted to create a kingdom independent of the Dai Co Viet in the mid 11C. His revolt shook the region for ten years - its effects were felt as far as the Chinese provinces of Guangxi and Guangdong - and was only crushed with the help of the Chinese army. The temple has been rebuilt, but retains the naive charm of a small country temple with its white and red horses painted on the walls.
