On a corner of Plaza de Bolívar, the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception holds the tomb of Gregorio Vásquez de Arce y Ceballos (1638-1711), one of the greatest Colombian painters of the colonial period. Built between 1807 and 1823, this vast neo-Classical cathedral has a sober interior intersected by 14 massive pillars with gilded capitals and 14 side chapels. Its two bell towers were rebuilt after the earthquake of 1827, and the façade was restored in 1943.
