The Ichkeul nature reserve is made up of a 90km2 lake (the last freshwater lake in North Africa), marshland and the Jebel Ichkeul (511m), which dominates the park to the south. The reserve is one of the main wintering grounds for waterfowl in North Africa. Designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1980, it is one of the most beautiful bird reserves in the world, and home to species such as the wigeon, greylag goose, coot etc. In winter, when close to 200 000 birds can be found in the reserve, the spectacle is truly fascinating. In spring, flowers burst forth in the park's marshland, and even a few buffalo can be spotted roaming around.
