The development of this stretch of wasteland on a bend of the Spree river near the Wall began in 1993. An international competition was held and the "Band des Bundes" (Federation Ribbon) awarded first prize. The long "ribbon" (1km long and 100m wide) houses the main Federal ministries, from the Chancellor's garden to the Marie-Elisabeth-Lüders-Haus. In the building constructed along the Wall, an installation by Ben Wargin pays tribute to the memory of those killed while trying to cross the Wall.
