The St Nicholas district in the heart of Berlin was restored in 1987 for the 750th anniversary of the foundation of the city. Many historic buildings, such as the old Cölln church on the other bank of the Spree and the medieval houses on the Fischerinsel, were destroyed in the post-war period. Although some of the reconstructions are not a huge success (the houses have been built with concrete blocks), this area is still a pleasant place for a stroll, with its narrow streets lined with typical taverns.
