This triumphal gate is now the emblem of Berlin but for nearly three decades it was a symbol of the divided city: the monument used to be an integral part of the Berlin Wall, which ran from north to south towards Potsdamer Platz. Built by Carl Gotthard Langhans in 1789, the gate was inspired by the Propylaea of the Parthenon in Athens. It is crowned by a four-horsed quadriga by Gottfried Schadow, driven by a statue of Victory.
