This sturdy keep, which served as a refuge during the Anglo-Scottish wars, was built in 1460; the adjoining mansion is an early-17C addition. Both buildings were abandoned in favour of a neo-Classical mansion, which was completed in 1817. The property is surrounded by parkland and beautiful gardens laid out in the quarries from which sandstone was extracted to build the castle. This haven of greenery is planted with palm trees, exotic plants and a magnificent avenue of laburnum trees.
