The 358 steps up to the to the top of the mountain-temple (105m/344ft) were each sculpted in the form of naga (sacred serpents). The sanctuary itself is made up of five quincunx towers and was originally devoted to Shiva at its construction in the 11C. Rebuilt in the 13C, it was then rededicated to Mahayana Buddhism. The view from the plaza behind the western tower stretches all the way to the iconic Phnom Sampeu on the distant horizon.
