Unlike Bangkok, whose canals were gradually filled in and replaced by avenues, Thonburi has retained its network of khlong lined with old houses on stilts. It is best explored by boat, stopping off to visit the various temples and old houses, far from the frenetic pace of Bangkok. Beware however, modern concrete constructions are starting to encroach on the old lake district.
