The Royal Field (Sanam Luang) is popular with locals who come here to relax at the end of the day in the shade of the tamarind trees. As the temperature cools, the area becomes busy with groups playing football, or flying kites which dip and dance in the clear sky. The square is also used for royal cremations. In the southeastern corner of the esplanade (on the other side of Th. Ratchadamnoen Nai) stands a small, popular temple which houses a linga, the Lak Muang, which marks the foundation of the city. This monument is believed to have the power to make wishes come true.
