The Church of St-Pierre cuts a solitary figure, rising among the cypresses of its old graveyard. A listed UNESCO World Heritage Site along the "Way of Saint James" pilgrim route of France, this masterpiece of Poitou Romanesque art is built out of warm-coloured stone. Noteworthy for its harmony of line and sumptuous decorative carving, it sits in the peaceful, rural setting of the village of Aulnay-de-Saintonge.
