Built on the foundations of a Roman edifice, probably a temple, this 13C-14C building is a fine example of the transitional Romanesque-Gothic style. It features a superb series of sculpted doorways which became a model for later production in the region. The handsome, yet simple Romanesque campanile is also worthy of note. Within are frescoes by Andrea de Litio (1450-1473), an Abruzzi artist, depicting the life of Joachim and Mary and which fuse formal Gothic opulence with the realism of the Tuscan school.
