At the end of Dionysiou-Areopagitou street, a paved road leads to this site, one of the most pleasant in Athens. A path wends its way up through the pines, passing several troglodytic dwellings, one of which is said to have housed Socrates' prison. Dominated by the Philopappu monument (AD 114-116), the summit offers fine views of the Acropolis, especially at sunset. The façade of the 10m-tall stele was once preceded by a funerary chamber containing the sarcophagus of this benefactor of Athens.
