Laid out in 1834 by King Otto I and dotted with areas of greenery, Constitution Square is home to Athens' main political buildings and is often the site of anti-austerity demonstrations. At the foot of the Parliament, in front of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, tourists gather on the hour to watch the changing of the guard (known as evzones in Greek). The square is also home to the National Gardens, which offer a pleasant respite from the noise and traffic of the city.
