The former Turkish quarter is now a working-class shopping district, home to Athens's flea market. Particularly lively in the mornings, Monastiraki Square is at the heart of the action. You will notice the bell tower of the Byzantine church, Panagia Pandanassa. Nicknamed monastiraki ("little monastery"), it is the namesake of the local bazaar, which in Ottoman times stretched as far as the Roman Agora.
