This vast covered market hall dating from 1886 is home to the largest market in Athens, also known as the Varvakios market. Butchers and fishmongers line the central and two lateral alleyways (stoa), while fruit, vegetables and spices are sold at the stalls on Varvakios square opposite the market hall. The market is busy first thing in the morning and is also popular with night owls, who gather in its restaurants to sample the local tripe soup (patsa).
