Saint-Vaast abbey church (1833) was elevated to the status of a cathedral to replace Notre-Dame-de-la-Cité. A monumental staircase precedes the classical façade. The majestic interior is reminiscent of a Roman basilica. Columns with Corinthian capitals adorn the nave, transept and choir. The 19C statues of saints are from the Panthéon in Paris. Frescoes on the right side of the transept include Saint Vaast taming a bear. By the altar, note the Nativity and Resurrection scenes by Desvallières.
