Founded by Sultan Hassan in the 14C, this gigantic madrasa (7 900m2) is a gem of Mamluk-era architecture. Behind its long, tall façade, which lends it the look of a fortress, the central courtyard is bathed in light, and an ablutions basin stands in the centre. Each façade has an iwan (vaulted area), where teaching of a branch of Sunnism is taught. The minaret with three galleries is the tallest in Cairo (81m).
