Built in 1340 by Emir Al-Tunbugha al-Maridani, this mosque stands out because of its stunning variety of styles. You enter the courtyard, with its porticos and ablution fountain from Sultan Hassan Mosque, via a handsome green and white marble doorway. The prayer room, with eight columns recycled from Ptolemaic times, is closed off by a wooden partition with an openwork design, the only one of its kind in Cairo. Note the beautifully sculpted stalactite decoration on the minaret and mihrab, a star made of mother-of-pearl, red stone and blue enamel.
