Mt Sainte Victoire, known affectionately as "La Sainte" locally, stands east of Aix-en-Provence. With its instantly recognisable shape, it is a symbol of Provence, a true rallying point. It was immortalised by Cézanne, who, through tireless research and a quasi-mystical bid to get to the bottom of his art, portrayed this mountain, which seems to have haunted him, some 60 times.
