There are few modern intrusions to mar the Victorian harmony of Marine Terrace, which forms a row of small hotels and family-run guesthouses with sea views. To the north, the Cliff Railway, a steam train dating back to 1896, still scales the slopes of Constitution Hill. The ruins of the castle stand on the promontory looking down over the pier, which has been partly destroyed by the sea.
