This former volcano, which reaches 1738 m at its highest point, is the highest Tuscan mountain south of the River Arno and feeds many rivers including the Sienna and the Grosseto. Its slopes, covered lower down by vines and olive trees give way to a beautiful forest of chestnut, beech and pine trees. From Abbadia S. Salvatore, a winding road skirts the old volcano, offering many impressive views. From the summit, you have a particularly impressive view over the surrounding region.
