The largest area of protected natural landscapes in the Czech Republic covers an area of over 68 000ha, where the Sumava mountain ridges rise to an altitude of 1 375m along the border with Germany and Austria. From the 14C onwards, the region prospered thanks to its gold and silver mines. It is now popular with hiking, kayaking and winter sports enthusiasts.
