Soli (Soloi), one of the powerful cities in Ancient Cyprus, is said to have been founded on the advice of Solon, the Athenian lawmaker, who lived out his last years on Cyprus. The vestiges are not particularly clearly defined: the stones were plundered in the 19C to build the quays at Port Said. There remain the foundations of a 5C basilica with its mosaic pavements, and a 2C Roman theatre, restored with the help of a lot of concrete. Shows are sometimes staged here in summer.
