The northernmost of the Amami Islands, Amami-Ōshima has the largest surface area (712 km2) and is the most populous island in the archipelago. Its subtropical climate guarantees mild temperatures year round, promoting the development of a dense virgin forest that covers most of the territory. Its rocky and indented coastline harbours magnificent beaches in some of the creeks to the north and east of the island. The local emblem is the distinctive Amami black rabbit, said to have existed since ancient times.
