In a wooded park, the rotunda was an outlying defence post and gunpowder store linked to the town by a tunnel. The gates of this huge red-brick building give onto an inner courtyard. From 1939, the Nazis put it to sinister use as a place of torture and execution, and as a holding area for those destined for the death camps, notably Belzec. The surrounding cemetery is today a simple and dignified place of memorial.
