A rare oasis of shade trees and cool breezes in an otherwise arid region, this splendid city park was designed by the Olmsted brothers, and the touch of those master landscape architects remains evident. The central drive, lined with blossoming trees, flower beds and pruned shrubs, leads to an elevated bandstand framed by the spreading branches of enormous sycamores. Shaded lawns stretch off in all directions, and sidewalks lead through an aviary full of exotic birds (mostly colorful varieties of pheasant) and to a cacophonous duck pond crowded with mallards, domestic geese and gulls. The park's west side faces one of the nicest clusters of Arts and Crafts-style homes in Walla Walla.
