North of Villach, the foothills of Gerlitzen (alt. 1,909m/6,262ft) are lapped by Lake Ossiach. In winter this mountain range, well-equipped in hotels, is very popular among skiers. A scenic trail goes across the Gerlitzen leaving from Bodensdorf and climbs to an altitude of 1,764m/5,787ft among woodland and alpine meadows. Those with a taste for adventure can continue upwards, on foot or by cable car; at the top they will be rewarded with a stunning vista of lakes, mountains and glaciers.
