The so-called "Knot Gate" that you pass through as you leave the gardens is one of the last remains of the 16C perimeter wall. The motto of the House of Bragança was depois de vós, nós ("after you, us") and its symbol was these knots, on account of the double meaning of the word nós ("us" or "we" and "knots").
