This understated square has since 1792 been the site of one of the world's leading opera houses. Badly damaged by fire in 1996, La Fenice has been returned to its former glory. Whilst updating the theatre (with the creation of recital and chamber music rooms), Aldo Rossi has preserved the superb concert hall with its green ceiling, stucco work and caryatids, as well as its foyers lit by Murano chandeliers and decorated with phoenix-themed tapestries.
