Homeland for the Oriental White Stork (Konotori no Sato Park)
De Groene Gids
De beoordeling van de Michelin Gids
This park makes it possible to observe oriental white storks in their natural habitat of ponds and lakes close up. From Siberia originally, they are larger than their European cousins (approx. 1.4m/4.6ft long and weigh up to 5kg/11lbs) and have a black beak. A reintroduction programme was set up in 1965, but the first birds raised by the centre were only released into the wild in 2005. Today over a hundred birds (now a protected species) live in the region.
