A popular retreat from the bustle of nearby downtown, these islands function as Toronto's principal public parkland. Formed from the erosion of Scarborough Bluffs, this narrow landmass was a peninsula until 1853, when a violent storm severed it from the mainland, creating the present string of islands. Extending 6km/3.7mi from end to end, the islands are graced with expansive lawns, age-old shade trees, sandy beaches, marinas and splendid views of downtown Toronto.
