This community, though smaller than the Pleasant Hill group, was wealthier in land and property. Its 349 members owned 6,000 acres and more than 200 buildings-only a fraction of which remain. Like their Pleasant Hill counterparts, they sold a variety of products. The colony lasted from 1807 until 1922, when the encroaching Industrial Age and declining membership sealed its fate. The restored 1824 Centre House contains hundreds of Shaker items, including built-in cabinets and cupboards as well as numerous handcrafted early-19C beds and tables.
