The monumental Smederevo Fortress is a perfect example of medieval Serbian architecture. It was built in the 15C by the despot Durad Brenković, who had the relics of Saint Luke brought there from the island of Rhodes. A real city within the city, this vast complex with a triangular plan housed a garrison, a palace, a keep and annexes. It served temporarily as the Serbian capital, before falling into the hands of the Ottomans for three centuries.
