The enormous Angkor archaeological park (over 400km²/250mi²) bears witness to the Khmer Empire's splendour between the 9C and 13C. A designated UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992, it was in this region for over 4 centuries, that each new monarch built his own capital city and State temple, symbols of his divine right to rule (çakravartin) and of the glory of whichever god he worshipped, be it Shiva, Vishnu and later the Buddha. Grandiose and not to be missed.
