Shimoda's History Museum recounts the history of the town following its encounter with Commander Perry's fleet. A scale model shows how the port had to adapt to satisfy the water and coal requirements of these new vessels that were totally unknown to the Japanese. There is also an account of how the typhoon that destroyed Admiral Putyatin's Russian ship enabled Russians and Japanese to work together, each learning new naval construction techniques on the way.
