The wetlands (ciénagas) and many waterways surrounding Mompox are popular with iguanas, howler monkeys, egrets and herons, and are also great for a boat trip. The boat navigates along canals built over the centuries both to fight flooding and link up the different arms of water; it passes through small villages, from time to time crossing fishermen hooking local species such as catfish and bocachicos.
