In the 18C, the valley of the Rio San Antonio, which supplied the water for drinking and crop irrigation, was the site of five Franciscan missions (including Fort Alamo). They were all built according to the same plan: church and chapel, convent, Coahuiltecan living quarters, farmland, a granary and a blacksmith. It is still possible to distinguish traces of the geometric designs painted by Coahuiltecans in the Mission Concepciõn church (c.1731) and convent. San José, the "Queen of the Texas Missions", is the easiest to get to from Downtown.
