This residence built in 1768 by the wealthy Homma family to accommodate Lord Sakai during inspections, unusually features both a samurai residence and an elegant home for merchants (of lower social status). This unusual division of communal space is underscored by each architectural detail. The quality of the wood, the decorations and the height of the ceiling change as soon as you cross the frontier separating the apartments from each other. A unique opportunity to grasp the social hierarchy that prevailed during the Edo period.
