The statue of Christ the Redeemer, which dominates Rio from the summit of the Corcovado, has become the universal emblem of the city. Designed by Heitor da Silva Costa and Paul Landowski in 1922 as part of a competition to mark Brazil's centenary, the statue weighs in at 1,145t and stands at a height of 30m! A journey in a rack railway train through the thick forest of Tijuca makes a wonderful introduction to the Corcovado, not to mention the superb views!
