A peaceful little granite island in the Baltic offering a variety of landscapes: woods and rocky coastlines interrupted by lovely beaches and fishing villages (Hasle, Tejn, Gudhjem, Melsted) where herring is smoked. The first inhabitants, the Burgondes, were followed by the Danish archbishop of Lund; Bornholm later belonged to Lübeck. The island is known for its round fortified churches (12C), where islanders took refuge in the event of danger. Nylars Kirke, Ols Kirke, Nykirke and Østerlars Kirke are the most typical, with three levels and an oval apse.
