Popayán's oldest church (1546) was built on the site of a thatched-roofed chapel dedicated to St Catherine and St Barbara. This small construction withstood all the earthquakes that struck the city between 1736 and 1906 but had to be rebuilt after that of 1983. Over the years, a new roof and embellishments added to the side chapel have considerably altered its original aspect.
