Ponte Nuovo spans the River Golo to the east of Ponte-Leccia. A symbol of Corsican history, on 8 May 1769, it was the scene of a tragic battle between Pasquale Paoli's troops and the French army, which marked the end of the war of independence and resulted in the annexation of Corsica to France. It was partially destroyed during World War II. Today its ruins, adorned in Corsican flags, stand upstream from the new bridge.
